Specialist Lab Cleaning at a Containment Level 2 Tissue Culture Laboratory in Cambridge

Octaclean recently completed a technical cleaning project within what will become a containment level 2 (CL2) tissue culture laboratory on a research park in Cambridge. The laboratory had undergone extensive building work in preparation for the client moving into the new facility. Our brief was to deliver a fully compliant clean and to seal the flooring using a durable wet-look polish, ensuring the laboratory met stringent hygiene and operational standards prior to occupancy.

Understanding Containment Level 2 Laboratory Requirements

Cleaning within a CL2 tissue culture environment requires detailed knowledge of biosafety protocols, regulatory compliance, and contamination control. Unlike standard cleaning, CL2 labs demand meticulous procedures to prevent cross-contamination and ensure that surfaces, equipment, and floors meet the expectations of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and institutional biosafety requirements.

Our team is experienced in maintaining aseptic conditions, handling sensitive lab surfaces, and understanding the materials commonly found in biotech facilities. Dust, debris, or residues left from construction can compromise both operational integrity and experimental outcomes, making precision cleaning critical before the laboratory becomes operational.

The Cleaning Process

The project was carefully planned and executed over multiple nights to minimise disruption to the research park’s other tenants and ongoing operations. Our multi-stage process included:

  1. Comprehensive Dust and Debris Removal – All surfaces, including workbenches, floors, and peripheral areas, were meticulously cleaned to remove dust generated by building work. Special attention was given to corners, edges, and areas prone to particle accumulation.

  2. Mechanical Floor Washing – The flooring underwent multiple machine washes using controlled detergent solutions and deionised water to remove all construction residues. This step ensured a completely clean and neutral surface ready for polishing.

  3. Application of Wet-Look Floor Polish – Multiple layers of 25% solids wet-look floor polish were applied to seal the floor. This created a durable, smooth surface resistant to chemical spills, abrasion, and heavy foot traffic while maintaining a high-gloss finish. Each layer was carefully applied and allowed to cure to achieve complete sealing.

This approach not only enhances the laboratory’s aesthetic but also provides a surface that is easier to maintain, fully compliant with lab hygiene standards, and safe for research staff.
